Taking a break, 2021 (Harika Maddala/Bay City News)

Hi! We are a small — okay, tiny — business in Northern California. We started our company in December 2019 after becoming alarmed about plastic pollution and climate change. We began making shampoo bars, which were a smash hit with friends and family, before expanding into other zero-waste bars.

As of October 2022, we estimate we’ve taken some 20,000 plastic bottles out of circulation. Yay! We are proud to have our bars sold at RE-UP Refills, The Ecology Center, and The Filling Station in Berkeley; FillGood in Albany; Bay Made in Oakland; FillerUp in Morgan Hill; Right On Refillery in Los Altos, and Byrd’s Filling Station in San Mateo.

Sisters Tessa and Davia are Co-CEOs and Julia — “mom” — is COO — the researcher, formulator and chief bar-maker.

We make decisions collectively. And, depending on who gets to work first, you’ll find us grooving to “70s pop radio” or “Today’s Hits radio” as we work.

Sustainabar is a labor of love. By day, Tessa and Davia are high school students and Julia works as a writer. Thank you for your interest in Sustainabar!
